THE UNISEX – Castle of Air Taken from their debut album, White Days, released on July 18th 2005. Those who fondly remember The Unisex’s crystalline pop from last year - best exemplified by the divine ‘Take Me Higher’, and a string of tumultuous London showcases - will be delighted to hear that the band have compiled all their long-deleted EP releases onto an LP called ‘White Days’ on Shifty Disco along with some previously unreleased tracks. If latest evidence of their astral projection comes with the retrospective ‘White Days’ LP, their forthcoming debut album proper promises to be an even wilder affair. Where once their songs shimmered with a bubblegum appeal, now they rock with a more vicious edge. After two support dates with Mark Gardener (Ride) and Andy Bell (Ride, Oasis), Kalle Gustafsson (The Soundtrack Of Our Lives) invited the band to his Gothenburg studio (a converted bank vault) to record their record. The Unisex are maturing into a sartorially obsessed psych-rock band to give the likes of Kasabian a run for their money. www.theunisex.net SEAGULL STRANGE – High Hopes Taken from their new EP, Animals, released on August 8th 2005. Imagine that moment of hair-raising electric tension just before the storm clouds unleash the torrent. This is where you will find Seagull Strange frontman and songwriter Dan Telling. Holding his band and songs in that still-calm that is always threatening to break into an onslaught of emotion. The brooding tension of the live show will hold you as each new song climbs to the breaking point leaving the audience breathless and dizzy but eager to begin again. With a voice likened in the same breath to Neil Young, Pet Shop Boys, and Kurt Cobain and music that seems to be the bastard child of 80s synth pop, 70s rock and Bristolian Beats the 6 member band captures you in its moment with hooks and choruses you will be humming for weeks, a live energy that stops you in your tracks, a record sound that is strange and familiar which all leaves you feeling snuck up on, beaten to the floor and won over in the time it takes for a beat of your heart. Seagull Strange is about to take flight. www.seagullstrange.com |
