King of Spain are again in the A&R hotseat and have hand-picked this week's Shifty Disco Download Club release for you...
Ivan Campo - Sobriety
"Ivan Campo are definitely the most original act that we have put on at Flux=Rad. They roll up to the venue with pretty much just a guitar,
a Casio toy keyboard-synthesiser and a box of tricks ! They don't carry much equipment with them, but what they lack in conventional large
instruments, they more than make up for in the incredibly versatile use hey make of their weird and wonderful collection of varied instruments,
encompassing shakers, recorders and washboards. I would describe their sound as very charming/ cheeky lo-fi /folk and they will engage the audience
into bopping away right from the start; always leaving them wanting more by the end! They get the fingers clicking and feet tapping before you even
know you're doing it! In a nutshell: we booked them once for Flux=Rad and they have been back by public demand ever since."
KoS
Ivan Campo, the super Spaniard with the big hair, shares his name - with a nu-folk ensemble who will take you on a journey through the
mysteries of their minds. Hitchcock and The Beatles' White Album are just some of Ivan Campo's preoccupations. Characterised by a playful
suspense, their songs are as likely to be about the unsolved death of Alexander Litvinenko as they are about love and loss.
Based in the Northwest of England, Ivan Campo produce interweaving melodies combined with a musical unpredictability influenced by artists as varied
as Tyrannosaurus Rex, Nick Harper and Arcade Fire. The effect is a unique style infused with echoes of films, snatched memories and a healthy sense
of the absurd. Their next E.P entitled 'Super 7' will be released on 30th March 2009. Tracks have already received airplay from the likes of Bob
Harris (Radio 2) and Tom Robinson (BBC6).
King Of Spain's debut album, 'Battleships and Aeroplanes' will be released nationally on April 6th 2009. The band are supporting the release with tour dates throughout January, February, March and April across the UK (and in Berlin).
