The Weird & Wired World of Autons
Their debut single, Snakes, was voted runner up in last yearıs Festive Fifty and received praise like this: "Autons impress with the brilliant Snakes!" Radio One's One Music and "Snakes is a work of fucking genius! Like loads of my favourite punk records rolled into one." 10/10 Mojo Magazine and support from fanzines from around the world.
Election Singer is a Buzzcocks-quick slap of elegantly-yobbish electro punk. It call's out a few people, you will know who they are (politicians, X-Factor wannabes, wannabes, will neverbes).
Available here through the Shifty Disco Download Club, The Devil In Me is the lead song from their acclaimed debut album, Short Term Manifesto ("This is the sound of a band either reinventing electro-pop for a new generation or mutilating it within an inch of its life." 8/10 Rock Sound - this song was also placed at Number One in their Decks of Death section).
The single is a joint release by Repeat Records UK and Zip Records USA and it is distributed by Shellshock UK.
Autons are currently co-hosting the April Andrew Morrison Radio Show on Dandelion Radio - hear the Dead Kennedy's Moral Majority back to back with Public Enemy's Night of the Living Bassheads and you will have a good idea of what an Autons live show is like (punk rock fronted by Roxy Music era Bryan Ferry - yes! It is that weird and wired!).
Autons are playing live in April 2008:
- Friday 18, Fight Club, Portsmouth
- Tuesday 22, The Cellar Bar, Cambridge
- Wednesday 23, The Dublin Castle, London
- Friday 25th, The Railway, Winchester
You can hear stuff on MySpace and on YouTube, the pick of the bunch are: Autons video to their debut single Snakes
Autons video to their climate change song Maybe, recently cited by The Times and The Ecologist as one of the most important eco songs ever.
The video was put together by environmentalist film maker Yesca, who is part of the Undercurrents media collective, and posted on YouTube.
"I believed the song deserved to be heard by as many people as possible" says Yesca "and I wanted to make something that would inspire others to wake-up to the seriousness of climate change".
The new single, Election Singer, is more typical of the band's hyperspeed live shows. Election Singer has already received attention from Al Gore and MTV "something to do with an election over there" jokes David.
Autons are named after the Dr Who baddies (the plastic mannequins which came to life - the original 1970s versions who inspired cult classic The Dawn Of The Dead movie). Autons love cult TV, horror flicks, punk rock and FA Cup finalists Portsmouth FC!
