The Beauty Shop released their first album in 2002 ('Yr Money Or Yr Life'- Shoeshine Records) and immediately garnered impressive notices in the press. From the wilds of Illinois this 3 piece have been compared with Nick Cave, Violent Femmes and The Handsome Family with a Leonard Cohen "bad attitude" vocal twist. This kind of attention continued with the release of their second album, 'Crisis Helpline' (Shoeshine 2004).
The band have an edgy lo-fi country noir sound that owes as much to J Mascis as it does to Johnny Cash and lead singer John Hoeffleur's down beat sense of humour really becomes evident onstage. Drummer Ben 'Creech' Ucherek and bassist Ariane Perlata provide solid backing to Hoeffleur's lyrical wisdom. In 2005 The Beauty Shop released 2 singles, 'Paper Hearts For Josie' and 'A Desperate Cry For Help' and performed a handful of intimate club gigs. The band had 'Single Of The Week' in The Independent with 'What's On' proclaiming: "John Hoeffleur is worthy of comparison with Beck, Cash and Cohen". There were also sessions on BBC 6 Music and support from Mark Radcliffe, Virgin Radio and Janice Long.
'Yard Sale' sees the band selecting tracks from both of their first 2 albums and is released 27 March 2006.
