A boiling cesspool of pent-up frustration.
Endless, day-in day-out drudgery. The same old shit reheated and served up as fresh by tabloid newspapers who feed on the public's voyeurism.

But what would we do if it all ended? No news today. No rapes and no murders, no rats found in burgers. Where would we be if nuns didn't take cocaine and no stupid rock stars blew out their brains?

Joey Herzfeld scrapes the bottom of a particularly grimy barrel to dredge up the story of one man's descent into madness, trying to come to terms with the day that nothing happened. Deprived of his lifeblood - the endless tales of other people's misery - he gets so goddam bored he murders his wife and goes to the chair, laughing as they shave off his hair. Just another day in Emmerdale then.

"Always The Same" is a work of evil genius - hilarious and scary. It's the demons that lurk in the souls of Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits and Nick Cave wrapped in a disjointed carnival of New Orleans jazz and it makes Suicide's "Frankie Teardrop" sound like another day at the office. It's just the tale of another man's personal tragedy. Nothing to bother yourself with. Everything is still as it was in your world. Always the same.

Joey Herzfeld - Only here for the nasty things in life.
