It's a pop thing. Sunshine melodies and a big cheesy grin with perfect white teeth.
After ten months of eclectic releases - everything from punk rock to arthouse electronic experimentation - Shifty Disco plucked a perfect pop hit out of the air. "Welcome" is a breezy guitar canter with a cheerfully snappy chorus and a discreet string arrangement. A little something to brighten your day.
A mere three gigs into their pop infancy, Shifty Disco immediately spotted the enormous songwriting talent of The Full Monty, four teenage school friends possessed by the spirit of 60's West Coast pop and Pebbles punk and without further ado decide to release a single. It's called seizing the moment. Something the major labels know precious little about.
Remixed by legendary Californian pop producer Nathan Nathans Jr, "Welcome" is giddy, naive and impossibly chirpy. The sound of Summer to chase away the darkness and pump your brain with serotonin.
The band have now split up, but three of the former members now make up three-quarters of Hester Thrale.
