Shifty Disco's July release came hot on the heels of Shiftymania in June as Radio 1 went Frigid Vinegar crazee. (In case you hadn't noticed, we also released the rather wonderful Dustball 'Like monkeys do'.) This single breaks yet more new ground for the Shifty gang since Calc hail from France. 1998 saw our first non-Oxford and non-UK releases, and in '99 we headed out into Europe in our never-ending search for talent.
Calc hail from Bordeaux, and despite their tender years (aged between 19 and 23) they've been picking up rave reviews over that side of the Channel. Built around one young man, Julien Pras, the band weave delicate melodies around a dirty stream of guitars, and have been compared to Ben Lee or Dinosaur Jr. The band, or rather Julien, have been writing and touring for three years (although the current line-up is only a year old). Their debut album, 'Something Sweet', was released in much of Europe in '99, and has been selling well. In their short career, they have already shared a stage with Grandaddy, Aerial M, Sleater-Kinney, Polar and Helium.
- Julien: Guitars/Vocals
- David: Bass
- Mathieu: Keyboards
- Hugo: Drums/Backing vocals
You can see that French people really aren't aliens after all by looking at our rather lovely Calc picture.
